Catalog Description: This course will not only be an introduction tothe Qur'an, the Muslim faith, and the fabric ofIslamic societies, starting with the life ofMuhammad, but we will explore Islamic culturesaround the world as incredibly varied livingtraditions. We will study Islamic political andintellectual history from the liberal end of thespectrum through the ultraconservative Islamist(and militant) end of the spectrum, and examineIslamic practices, both early and contemporary,and will also work in our classroom and in areamosques to get to know Muslims themselves, throughexamining Islamic spirituality, art, culture andfamily life.
