Alfred Douglas Smith, Jr. graduated from Roanoke College in 1927 with a BS degree after an extremely active college career. From Roanoke he returned to Richmond and diligently pursued a successful real estate career for over fifty years and was secretary-treasurer of Wilson Schmidt, Inc.
Professionally, he was a member of the Virginia Real Estate Commission and served on the Richmond Board of Realtors. Doug shared his expertise in real estate as a lecturer at University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. His collection of speeches, "Doug Smith Speaking," is available in the Roanoke College Library.
Doug excelled in many fraternal organizations as Grand Master of all Virginia Masons, edited the Virginia Masonic Herald, and held honorary membership to over twenty-four Masonic lodges. He founded the Mason's Virginia Research Lodge. In addition, Doug served as Grand Praetor to the Virginia Province of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
An outstanding member of his community, Doug was active in the First English Lutheran Church in Richmond, having taught Bible classes there for over twenty-five years. He also served on the Board of the Richmond Central YMCA as President of its Men's Club, as well as serving on the Marion College Board of Trustees.
Long a loyal Roanoke College alumnus, Doug served as the Class Agent for the Class of 1927. He was a Reunion Chairman for Roanoke's Honor Guard classes and a member of the Roanoke College Associates.
Doug served as an example to all, as he stood ready to serve his alma mater.
