Mike Flanary is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Roanoke College golf team. Flanary has extensive experience on the college and professional golf scenes.
Flanary was a four-year letterwinner at Bluefield State College where he earned a bachelor degree in Business Administration in 1990. In his four-years on the Big Blues’ golf team, he won two tournaments, one as a freshman and one as a junior. As a senior, Flanary was the leading stroke averager on the team and was also named ‘Mr. Bluefield State College.’
After graduating college, Flanary became the assistant golf professional at Hidden Valley Country Club for five years (1990-1994). From there, he moved on to the Ben Hogan Golf Company where he worked in the Tour Department for one year (1995) and in the sales department for two (1996-97).
Since his appointment as the head coach of the Roanoke College golf team prior to the 1998 season, Flanary has helped the Maroons become an annual contender for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship. In just his first season, thee Maroons placed second at the ODAC championships. In his three-year stay at RC, the Maroons have won three tournaments, including the Washington & Lee Fall Invitational which they have won twice (1998 & 1999). During both the 1998 and 1999 campaigns, Roanoke finished second at the Virginia Division III state meet. The Maroons were ranked as high as number five in the South Region during the 1999 season, the highest spot they earned during the 1990s. In addition to team accolades, Flanary has coached two of his players at Roanoke to All-Conference status.
