Layman and Bonasera Named ODAC
Athletes of the WeekLayman Won Two Softball Games, Bonasera Set Men's LAX Scoring Record
SALEM, VA--Roanoke College senior Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) and sophomore Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) were both named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Monday. Layman received the award for her play on the softball diamond, while Bonasera earned his honors for his action in a men’s lacrosse uniform. Layman helped the Roanoke softball team go 4-0 in two weekend double-headers, picking up two wins and a save. She also batted .333 and scored two runs as the Maroons improved to 25-4 overall and 6-0 in league action. In the first game of a double-header with Randolph-Macon College, Layman allowed just two hits and struck out six batters. The Maroons defeated the Yellow Jackets 2-0 in that contest and followed with a 13-0 five-inning win in which Layman was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. On Sunday, the Maroons hosted Virginia Wesleyan College in another ODAC double-header. Layman got the win in game one, going the distance and allowing just two hits and fanning three batters. In the second game, Layman came on with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, retired the last two batters and got the save.
On Tuesday afternoon, Bonasera wrote his name into the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse record books by recording 14 points on eight goals and six assists. The 14 points broke the RC single-game scoring record of 13 which was held by Paul Goldsmith (1983) and Brett Smith (1993). His eight goals were just two short of another RC single-game standard. In a loss to Hampen-Sydney College on Saturday, Bonasera scored three of RC’s seven goals. The sophomore is now just eight points shy of reaching 100 for his career and will become the 30th player in team history to do so.
