Roanoke Beats Lynchburg 2-0, Receives Automatic Bid to NCAA
Tournament
SALEM, VA--For the third time in the past four
seasons, the Roanoke College men’s soccer team claimed the
championship of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, winning
this season’s title with a 2-0 win over Lynchburg College
on Sunday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 12-6-2
on the season and receive the conference’s automatic bid
to the NCAA Division III national tournament., Lynchburg College
ends its season with a 10-8-2 overall mark.
The Maroons capitalized on two of their five shots in the contest.
The match’s first goal came in the 13th minute. After the
Hornets were called for a foul just outside the top edge of the
goal box, the Maroons set up for a free kick. Donny Smith and
Eric Eversole each got a quick touch, before Elliott Stallings
took a shot. Midway through the air, the shot deflected off of
the leg of an LC defender, changing direction, and reached the
back of the net. The goal was Stallings’ fourth in the past
two days.
The Hornets had several opportunities to tie the score go just
wide and in the 63rd minute, the Maroons scored an insurance goal.
Another LC foul outside the box set up another RC scoring chance.
This time on the free kick, Eversole took the first touch, blistering
a curling shot into the upper right corner of the net.
The Maroons defense, led by Smith, Ben Wright, Adam Gray, and
JM Monger posted its 10th shutout of the season. Chris Lovatt
recorded the win in goal for the Maroons, making two saves.
The Maroons will await the decisions of the NCAA men’s soccer
committee to see who and where they will play in their first match
of the national tournament. The bracket is scheduled to be released
late Sunday, perhaps earlier Monday.
