RC Men Take W&L Title

Loesel and Smith RC's Top Finishers

SALEM, VA— The Roanoke College men’s cross country team placed six runners in the top 10 to take the championship of the Washington & Lee Invitational on Saturday morning. The RC men compiled 26 points, while the second place team had a total of 61 points. On the women’s side, behind the winning effort of Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) the Maroons were second out of six teams.

Laurence Loesel (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was the second place finisher on the men’s side, running a 27:57, 49 seconds off the winning pace. Will Stuart (Independence, VA/Grayson County) ran a 28:35 to take sixth overall, while Stephen Wheatley (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) and Blake Dalton (Gretna, VA/Altavista) finished seventh and eighth with times of 28:49 and 28:50. Rounding out RC’s top 10 finishers was junior Jason Belt (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day), who was 10th with a time of 28:53.

On the women’s side, Smith ran a season-best 18:20 to take the women’s individual championship. Smith was 1:33 faster than her closest competitor. Alli McVey (Bowdoinham, ME/Mt. Ararat) was fourth overall, crossing the line in 20:43. Senior Jenny Kincaid (Mt. Sidney, VA/Fort Defiance) placed eighth in the race with a finishing time of 21:28.

The Roanoke cross country team takes next weekend off before hosting its own Maroon Invitational on September 30th. The Race at RC’s Elizabeth Campus is scheduled for 10:30.
