SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team advanced to the semifinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-0 win over Bridgewater College on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons, who improve to 11-5 on the season, will next play Lynchburg College at 3:00 pm at Eastern Mennonite University on Friday. Bridgewater sees its season come to an end with a 5-13 overall record. Ali Boyd (Bow, NH/Bow) led the Maroons to the victory, scoring twice and adding an assist on RC’s third goal. Both of Boyd’s goals came in the first half. With the two goals, Boyd becomes the first player at RC since the 1997 season to reach 30 goals in a career. She now has exactly 30. Her first goal came during a scramble in front of the BC cage. After several Bridgewater saves, the last on a Sara Lundgren (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) shot, Boyd stuck in her 29th goal of the season. Her second tally of the game came just over 10 minutes later and with 6:37 left in the first half.
Nicole Yodice (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional) scored the Maroons’ third goal. Her goal came on a shot directly off a penalty corner. Boyd put the ball into play to Yodice, who then sent a shot towards the BC goal. The ball defected off a defender’s stick and over the BC keeper’s head.
The Maroons pick up their fourth consecutive shutout over the Eagles of Bridgewater College. Including a 3-0 win during the regular season, the Maroons have outscored Bridgewater, 15-0, in the past four games. RC also improves to 7-2 against Bridgewater in the ODAC tournament. The Roanoke defense, led by the efforts of Courtney Apuzzo (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) and Erin Costello (Villanova, PA/Radnor), posted its ninth shout of the season.
Roanoke’s next opponent, Lynchburg College, was a 2-1 overtime winner over Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons won the regular season meeting with Lynchburg, 2-0, in September.
