SALEM, VA--The Eastern Mennonite Royals put an end to two Roanoke College field hockey streaks on Wednesday afternoon, beating the Maroons, 1-0, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. Roanoke falls to 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in conference play, while the Royals are now 5-2, 3-0. Roanoke’s five game winning streak came to an end with the loss as did its five-game shutout streak. EMU went into the game ranked 17th in the country, while the Maroons held down the 18th position. Eastern Mennonite’s Sara Nissley scored with 12:14 left in the first half, the game’s only goal. Kristin Moyer assisted on the goal. Despite allowing the one goal, the Maroons actually outshot EMU on the day, 7-6.
Both goaltenders had relatively quiet days in the cage. RC keeper Jodi Godbout (Davie, FL/Centennial {MD}) made three saves, while her EMU counterpart Erica Strong stopped four.
The Royals have not lost a regular season ODAC game since the 1993 season, and have not lost to an ODAC opponent at any point of the season since the 1995 campaign. The Maroons’ five-game winning streak was snapped with the loss, while its shutout run ran to 372 minutes before Nissley brought it to a close.
The Maroons head to Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday for a game with the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
