SALEM, VA--Behind a season-high 14 saves from junior goaltender Jodi Godbout (Davie, FL/Centennial {MD}), the Roanoke College field hockey team improved to 5-0 with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Lynchburg College Hornets on Friday afternoon. The Maroons also improved to 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Hornets fall to 2-2, 2-1 in ODAC action. For the first time all season, Godbout was seriously challenged in goal, facing 24 Lynchburg shots. She showed why she was a First Team All-ODAC selection last season, making the 14 saves in the winning effort. Nine of Godbout’s saves came in the second half, when the Hornets were awarded eight penalty corners. This was the fifth consecutive shutout Godbout and the Maroons have posted this season.
After Ali Boyd (Bow, NH/Bow) gave the Maroons a 1-0 victory with a goal with 15:26 left in the first half, the Maroons were outshot by the Hornets, 12-5, in the second half. The Hornets squandered a golden opportunity to tie the score with 16:19 left in the game, when Beth Pedigo (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) failed on a penalty stroke attempt. She was awarded the stroke after the Maroons were called for covering the ball in the circle, but missed the shot high and to the left.
After dominating the second half, the Hornets’ chances to tie the score were dashed when RC junior Sarah Tengwall (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s) redirected a shot by Emily Metro (Crofton, MD/Arundel) past the LC keeper with just 1:10 left in the contest. The goal gave RC the 2-0 lead.
The Maroons, who came into the game ranked 19th in the nation, extended their shutout streak to 350 minutes. This was the first time in over 10 years that the Maroons have beaten the Hornets in back-to-back years. The Maroons came out on top of a 2-1 score last season. Lynchburg was picked to finish second in the ODAC’s preseason’s coaches poll, while the Maroons were chosen fourth.
Roanoke is off until Wednesday, when they host five-time defending conference champion Eastern Mennonite in a 4:30 pm contest at RC’s Elizabeth campus. The Maroons’ lone regular season conference loss in 1999 came at the hands of the Royals, who also beat the Maroons in the ODAC championship game, 5-1.
