SALEM, VA--For the first time since the 1995 season, the Roanoke College field hockey team has recorded four consecutive shutouts. This comes after the Maroons defeated Sweet Briar College, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Salem. The Maroons are 4-0 on the season and have won all three of their Old Dominion Athletic Conference contests. Sweet Briar falls to 3-1, 2-1 in ODAC play. Just 11 minutes into the game, junior forward Ali Boyd (Bow, NH/Bow) scored the first of her three consecutive goals in the first half. Boyd would score her second goal with about 11 minutes left in the half, while her third came just two minutes later. Boyd entered the game as the nation’s leading scorer with 14 points. Nicole Yodice (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional), Rachel Flint (Towson, MD/Towson), and Sara Lundgren (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) each scored a goal in the second half to give the Maroons the 6-0 win.
In addition to running their shutout streak to 280 minutes, the Maroons also ran their winning streak over Sweet Briar to seven games. The Maroons, who outshot SB, 27-2 in the game, have not lost to the Vixens since the 1993 season and have outscored them 24-2 in that span.
The Maroons face perhaps their toughest task so far this season on Friday when they host Lynchburg College. The game between the 19th ranked Maroons and the Hornets, who were picked second in the ODAC’s preseason coaches poll, begins at 4:00 pm on RC’s Elizabeth Campus.
