SALEM, VA--Doug Cronin shot a 77 to pace the Roanoke College golf team to a victory in the 2000 Roanoke College Golf Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, VA. The Roanoke ‘A’ team won the event, combining to shoot a 314, eight strokes better than second place Hampden-Sydney. Under cold and very windy conditions, Hampden-Sydney’s John Williams took the individual competition, shooting a three-over 75, for his second win in as many weeks. Williams won last week’s Hampden-Sydney Invitational. Williams shot a 38 on the front nine and went in with a 37.
Roanoke’s Cronin recorded a score of 40 on the first nine holes and then put up a 37 on the back nine to place second overall in the individual standing with his 77. Matt Knights and Jeff Deacon, both members of Roanoke’s ‘A’ team on Tuesday, tied for third with rounds of 78.
Bridgewater College posted a 328 to place third in the tournament, while RC’s ‘B’ squad was fourth with a combined score of 338. Lynchburg College (343) and Emory & Henry (348) rounded out the field.
