Roanoke Takes Fourth at 1999 ODAC Golf Tournament

Madore and Mattox Earn All-Conference Honors

SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College golf team placed fourth at the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships which took place in Raleigh, NC on Monday and Tuesday. The Maroons shot 629 over the two-day event, firing a 321 on day-one, and following with a 308 on the second day.

Ryan Madore (Augusta, ME/Cony) finished in a tie for eighth place, shooting a 153 over the course of the championship. He struggled a bit on the first day, shooting a 79 (on a par 72), but rebounded to record a 74 in the second round. For his efforts, Madore was named to the All-Tournament squad.

Madore’s selection to the All-Tournament team came after he and Josh Mattox (Roanoke, VA/Northside) were both named to the All-Conference team. They become the first Roanoke golfers to earn All-Conference honors since 1994. This is also the first time since the league began selecting All-Conference teams in 1989 that two players from Roanoke College have been selected to the team.

In this week’s tournament, Mattox finished in a tie for 12th place with a total of 155. He registered an 80 in the first round, but came back to shoot a 75 in the second.

Among Roanoke’s other golfers in the tournament, Geoff Fountain (Fayetteville-Manilus, NY/Fayetteville-Manilus) finished in a tie for 14th, Jeff Deacon (Toronto, ONT/Avon Old Farms) was 25th, Nick Cardoza (N. Bradford, CT/Avon Old Farms) placed 39th, and Doug Cronin (Fayetteville-Manilus, NY/Fayetteville-Manilus) was 35th.
