Maroons Take First in W&L Invitational
Mattox and Deacon Shoot 74s To Place First
SALEM, Va.--Behind rounds of 74 from both Josh Mattox (Roanoke, VA/Northside) and Jeff Deacon (Toronto, ONT/Avon Old Farms), the Roanoke College golf team placed first among six ODAC schools at the Washington & Lee Invitational on Wednesday afternoon. As a team, the Maroons shot 305, besting the nearest opponent by nine strokes. Mattox and Deacon tied for first in the tournament, winning by just one stroke over a Washington & Lee golfer. In addition to their performances, Roanoke got a round of 77 from Nick Cardoza (N. Bradford, CT/Avon Old Farms) and two rounds of 80 from Geoff Fountain (Fayetteville-Manilus, NY/Fayetteville-Manilus) and Ryan Madore (Augusta, ME/Cony). Cardoza's round was good enough for a seventh-place individual finish.
Roanoke returns to the links on April 1st as it travels to Hampden-Sydney to play in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational. Also note that the Roanoke Invitational, scheduled for April 7th, has been removed from the schedule.
