Kylie Wernert Named ODAC Player of the Week
Award Comes A Week After Sister Lindsay's
SALEM, Va.--Roanoke College sophomore Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s women’s lacrosse Player of the Week. Wernert had a hand in 15 of Roanoke’s 44 goals last week, scoring 13 and handing out two assists. She helped the Maroons to a 3-0 record, as they defeated Guilford, Lynchburg, and Goucher. After a win on Tuesday afternoon (April 6th), the Maroons, currently ranked seventh in the nation, are 8-2 on the season and on a six-game winning streak. Last Tuesday, in a 16-3 win over ODAC foe Guilford College, Wernert came within one goal of tying the school record for the most goals in a game, when she scored eight. Her eight tallies came as she took a team season-high 19 shots on goal. Four of her goals in the game came in a six minute stretch in the second half.
She followed her eight goal performance with a four-goal, two-assist game in RC’s 10-8 victory over Lynchburg College, another conference opponent. She fired 10 shots at the Hornet goaltender in the game, and came away with six groundballs in the win.
As the Maroons returned home for a contest with traditionally strong Goucher College, Wernert found herself taking a much more defensive role (she is listed on the roster as a defender). Although she scored just one time against Goucher, she had an all-around strong outing, scooping five groundballs, forcing two turnovers, and controlling three draws.
On the season, Wernert, who has started all 10 games for Roanoke this year, has 29 goals and four assists for 33 points, second best on the Maroon team. She has vaulted into the team lead, after Tuesday’s 13-1 win over Bridgewater College, in groundballs, picking up 37 this season.
This is the second time in two weeks a Roanoke player has been named the conference player of the week, and second time in two weeks that a Wernert has beenawarded the honor. Last week, Kylie’s sister Lindsay was named the league’s outstanding women’s lacrosse athlete of the week.
