Layman Named to Acedemic All-District Team

Sophomore Earns Honor for Play and Studies

SALEM, Va.--Roanoke College sophomore Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) has been named to the 1999 College Division GTE Academic All-District III softball team. Layman, the 1999 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year, has led Roanoke to a 34-7 record this season and the team’s first ever bid to the NCAA tournament. The Maroons will play in the Atlantic Regional on Friday, squaring off with Salisbury State.

On the field, Layman leads Roanoke with a school-record 18 wins, and is currently 11th in the country in earned run average, allowing just 0.87 earned runs each time out. She is second on the team with 69 strikeouts and has eight shutouts on the campaign. At the plate, Layman is the third leading batter on the team, hitting at a .399 clip. She has scored a school-record 54 runs this season, has tied the school-record for doubles in a season (12), and has stolen 23 bases, also a school-record.

In addition to her outstanding credentials on the field, Layman does just as well in the classroom. A Spanish major, Layman currently has a 3.84 grade point average in her four semesters at Roanoke. She is the first player in Roanoke College softball history to earn this award.

With her selection to the All-District team, Layman advances to the national ballot. The GTE Academic All-American awards are given to those players, as voted on by members of CoSIDA, that are ‘starters or important reserves’ on his/her team, are in at least sophomore standing at the school, and maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average.

CoSIDA’s District III College Division (Division II and III schools) runs from the Commonwealth of Virginia to the state of Florida.
