Mazer To Head Field Hockey and Lacrosse Teams
SALEM, Va.--Roanoke College Director of Athletics Scott Allison announced on Thursday the hiring of Julie Mazer as the school’s new field hockey and women’s lacrosse head coach. Mazer will take over the head coaching duties of the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams from Katrina Silva who resigned last month to take the head women’s lacrosse coaching position at Division I Colgate University. Mazer comes to Roanoke College from Swarthmore (PA) College where she served as an associate head coach in both sports during the 1998-99 academic season. With her help, the Swarthmore field hockey team finished with a 13-7 record this past year, while the lacrosse squad went 8-8. This was her second tour of duty at Swarthmore. During the 1996-97 school year, Mazer served as an assistant coach in both field hockey and lacrosse for the Garnet Tide.
Prior to her second stint at Swarthmore, Mazer spent a year at William Smith College where she was an assistant coach with both the field hockey and lacrosse teams. While at William Smith, Mazer also had the head coaching responsibilities with the school’s junior varsity teams. In her one season at the Geneva, NY school, Mazer was instrumental in guiding the field hockey team to the 1997 NCAA Division III national championship.
Mazer earned her bachelor’s degree from West Chester (PA) University in 1994 in Health and Physical Education, with a teaching certification. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration, also from West Chester. As an undergraduate, Mazer was a member of the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams, with the field hockey club competing at the Division I level. She was a United States Women’s Lacrosse Association Honorable Mention All-American after her senior season at West Chester.
“I’m very excited about this new opportunity,” comments Mazer on her appointment to the Roanoke College coaching staff. “I know this is a great opportunity. I know both teams can be equally successful and I’m excited about leading both programs to new heights.” On Mazer, Scott Allison commented, “I’m impressed with her demonstrated devotion to both field hockey and lacrosse. We were looking for the candidate that would treat both sports on the same level.”
Mazer takes over a Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team that is coming off of a season in which it went 14-3 and recorded its ninth overall Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship, and second in three years. The Roanoke College field hockey team completed the 1998 season with an 11-7 mark, and a 4-4 record in conference play to finish fifth in the league.
