Game 1 - Worcester State (MA) 59, Chowan (NC) 57

Worcester State battled back from a 14-point deficit during the late stages of the first half to defeat the Braves of Chowan College, 59-57, in the first game of the tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The Lancers improve to 9-1 on the 1999-2000 campaign, while Chowan sees its record drop to 2-8.

Tied at 57 with just 33 seconds to play in the contest, Worcester State’s Demarr Langford banked in a layup to give the Lancers the 59-57 lead which they would hold onto for the remainder of the time. WSC had trailed for most of the contest, holding the lead for the first five minutes of the game, and not regaining it until eight minutes left in the second half, but held the Braves without a point for the final 2:52 of the contest and rack up the win.

Edward Mulvagh put the Lancers up by one with a free throw with eight minutes to go, but the two teams traded the lead for the rest of the time until Langford’s late layup.

Franky Pierre scored 17 points for the Lancers, who were without their leading scorer Mario Horton, who had a cast on his hand before the contest. Kevin Pettway added nine points and five steals for WSC, who play Roanoke at 7:00 on Wednesday for the championship.

Shawn Hubers drained five three-pointers for Chowan and finished the game with 19 points. Anthony McGruder chipped in 15 points for the Braves, while Bryan Christian was also in double-figures with 10.
