Maroons Cruise Past EMU, 105-81

Dunleavy Scvores 20 for Fourth Consecutive Game

SALEM, VA--Roanoke College junior Brad Dunleavy (Roanoke, VA/William Fleming) reached the 20-point plateau for the fourth consecutive game in leading the men’s basketball team to a 105-81 victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday evening. The Maroons, the 21st ranked team in the country, improve to 18-4 on the season and 13-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Royals fall to 9-13, 5-11.

Dunleavy is the first Maroon to have 20 or more points in four consecutive games since Hilary Scott pulled the trick during the 1993-94 season. Dunleavy tied the feat on Wednesday, going just 6-of-16 from the floor, but 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Kyle Murphy (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) had his second consecutive strong outing, putting in 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds before fouling out in the second half. Murphy also added an assist, a block, and a steal.

Roanoke’s senior point guard Paris Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) continued his domination of the Royals, going for 19 points and adding a career-high eight assists. Butler went 5-of-7 from the three-point line and now has 13 threes against EMU in two games this season. He hit for a school record eight in the first meeting between the two clubs.

The Maroons led by just five points at the break, 47-42, but exploded for 58 points in the second half, putting the ball game well out of the Royals’ reach. Seventeen of Eastern Mennonite’s 28 turnovers in the game came in the second half, as the Maroons outscored the Royals 58-39 in the half. The Maroons led by just eight points with 11:08 left on the clock in the second half, but went on a 20-7 run over the next four minutes to push the lead to 21 points at 89-68. The Royals scored just four field goals over the final 4:14 of the game and were unable to chip away at the large RC lead.

Neither team had a lead as large as seven points in the first half, until the Maroons went on a 6-0 run at about the four minute mark, pushing their lead to 11 points. The Royals responded with a 6-0 run of their own, cutting the margin back to five, where it stood heading into the intermission.

Eastern Mennonite’s Quincy Longacre (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) led all scorers in the game, tossing in 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. He also had 11 rebounds in the contest and swatted two Roanoke shots. Neal Lewis (Glen Allen, VA/Benedictine) finished the game with 13 markers, while the team’s leading scorer Joel Kauffman (Baxter, KY/Harlan), who came into the game averaging 16.8 points a game, was able to score just six.

Roanoke plays next on Saturday, hosting Washington & Lee in a men’s and women’s double-header in Salem. The men are scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 pm in the Bast Center, or immediately following the women’s game. The women are slated to begin a 5:00 pm.
