Maroons Roll Over Guilford, 107-63

Roanoke Posts Second Straight 100-Point Game Versus Quakers

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men’s basketball team had little trouble with Guilford College on Wednesday evening in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest, cruising to a 107-63 win in Salem. The Maroons, who are ranked 17th in the country this week, are now 13-2 on the year and 8-1 in conference play. The Quakers are 4-11 overall and 3-7 against conference opponents.

The Maroons had the game well in hand at the half, holding onto a 59-38 lead. The Maroons shot 57.9 percent from the field in the opening half of play and forced 17 Quaker turnovers by the time the intermission horn sounded.

Guilford scored the first bucket of the contest, but the Maroons quickly went on a 31-9 run over the next 11 minutes of the contest, opening the game up. The Quakers could get no closer than to within 18 points in the first half, and found themselves trailing by 21 at the break. The game went much the same in the second half, with Roanoke opening up the frame on a 6-0 run.

Brad Dunleavy (Roanoke, VA/William Fleming) led all scorers in the contest, dropping in 20 points, while also dishing out four assists. En route to 14 points, senior Paris Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) continued his hot shooting from outside, knocking down four three-pointers. A balanced scoring attack, which saw Jason Strickland (Charlottesville, VA/Covenant) score 13 and Cliff Jacobs (Monterey, CA/Oscar F. Smith) drop in 11 points, had all 13 players that saw minutes for the Maroons make a dent on the scoreboard. Ramsey Hathaway (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) was the other RC player in double-figures, putting in 10.

The Roanoke defense was just too strong for the Quakers all night. Guilford committed 28 turnovers in the game. Jaimar Mansel (Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St.Mary) had a game-best five steals. Guilford shot just 27.5 percent from the field in the game, going 19-of-69 from the floor. Senior Kyle Murphy (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) had a career-high four blocks in the game.

Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) paced the Quaker offensive attack, scoring 19 points, 15 coming from three-point land. Kindem finished the game 5-of-9 from behind the three-point arc. Leonardo Scott (Anderson, SC/TL Hanna) led all rebounders in the contest, swiping 11.

This was the second consecutive game against the Quakers in which Roanoke has scored 100 points or better. The Maroons closed out the 1998-99 regular season with a 109-85 victory over the Quakers, a game that was also played in Salem. In the past four games against Guilford in Salem, the Maroons are winning by an average of 34 points, scoring over 100 points in three of those games.

The Maroons play host to Randolph-Macon College on Saturday. The game will start at 3:00 pm, or immediately following the RC women’s basketball contest. The women host Randolph-Macon Woman’s college at 12:30 in the Bast Center.
