Maroons Set Records in 109-85 Victory over Guilford College
Squad Ties One Three-point Record, Ties Another
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College men's basketball team defeated the Guilford College Quakers tonight, 109-85, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. The Maroons improve to 12-12, 9-9 in the ODAC, while Guilford completes its 1998-99 season with a 3-21 mark, 2-16 in conference action.Roanoke used 15 three-pointers in the game and 41 overall field goals to get past the Quakers. RC's 15 three-pointers tied a school-record that was set back in 1996, while it set a new school-mark by attempting 40 threes in the game. The old mark was 32 set in a game against Eastern Mennonite in 1995. Nine of the team's three pointers came in the first half, but the Maroons could only manage a 52-51 intermission lead. Guilford shot 65.5 percent from the floor in the opening frame to stay in the game. After getting possession to start the second half, Jon Evans knocked down a jumper to put the Quakers up by one, 53-52. However, Roanoke then went on a 10-0 run, and never looked back. After pushing the advantage to 12 points, Roanoke used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to push the lead to 20. Roanoke continued its hot streak from the three-point land and at the game saw itself with a 24-point win. Jason Strickland (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) led the Maroons with 22 points, just one shy of a career-high, a mark that he set earlier this season. Strickland was 7-of-11 from the floor and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead all Roanoke players. For the second consecutive game, freshman Robby Pridgen (Akron, OH/St. Vincent/St. Mary) scored 20 points, but tonight he tied a school-record with six three-pointers in the contest. Pridgen joins junior guard Paris Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) as Roanoke players that have tied that record in the past week. Butler knocked down six threes last week in a win over Eastern Mennonite. In his final game on his home court, senior guard Dewayne Bullock (Indianapolis, IN/Arsenal Tech) scored 16 points and added four assists. Guilford's Jon Evans scored a game and career-high 35 points on 14-of-22 shooting. He also tied his season-high with 13 rebounds. Brad Woolley added 15 points for the Quakers, who outrebounded Roanoke in the game, 44-42. The Maroons will be the sixth seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament and will play Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday night at 8:00 pm in the Salem Civic Center.
