Maroons Fall to Hampden-Sydney, 95-77

Dunleavy Scores 20 Points in Loss, Maroons Now 16-4, 11-3

SALEM, VA--Hampden-Sydney College, the nation’s top ranked team, walked away from the C. Homer Bast Center with a 95-77 win over the Roanoke College men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon. With the loss Roanoke falls to 16-4 on the season and 11-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Hampden-Sydney, which has now won five straight games over the Maroons, improve to 21-0, 15-0 in conference play.

Before Roanoke could get on the board in the contest, Hampden-Sydney owned an 8-0 lead. The Maroons kept the lead to single-digits until the 10:19 mark of the first half when a layup from HSC senior Jack Jirak (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian) pushed the lead to 11. The Maroons would not get within 10 points the rest of the game, falling behind by as many as 28 points in the second half. At the half, the Tigers held a sizable 51-28 lead. In the second half, Hampden-Sydney extended its lead to as many as 28 points, before watching the Maroons mount a comeback attempt.

The Maroons went on a 7-0 run in the span of 29 seconds cut the Tigers lead to 12 points, that with 7:16 left in the game. However, Hampden-Sydney free throw shooting down the stretch held the Maroons at bay.

The free throw line proved to be a big difference in the game, as the Tigers held a 37-18 lead from the charity stripe. The Maroons had two players foul out and also saw three other players finish the game with four fouls apiece. Roanoke had more field goals in the game, but again were outrebounded by the Tigers, 41-33. In the first half alone, Hampden-Sydney made 22 of their 26 free throw attempts. The Tigers also took care of the ball in the game, committing just eight turnovers.

Hampden-Sydney senior Jeremy Harris (Farmville, VA/Fork Union) scored a career-high 23 points in the win, while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Harris finished the game 7-of-12 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line. Chris Fox (Hampton, VA/Hampton) and Jirak each finished the game with 15 points for the Tigers, who in addition to winning five straight over RC have also won nine of 10 from the Maroons. In all five Tigers had double-figures in the scoring column, including TJ Grimes (Onancock, VA/Nandua) who had 13. Fox also added six assists for the Tigers, the game’s top number.

Brad Dunleavy (Roanoke, VA/William Fleming) scored 20 points in the losing effort for the Maroons. Tom Dettloff (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) added 12 points and six rebounds for Roanoke, while Colby Leftwich (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) and Kyle Murphy (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) chipped in 11 each.

Roanoke is next in action on Monday night in Lynchburg, VA as the play the Hornets of Lynchburg College at 7:00 pm.
