Maroons Drop Second Game of the Season
Roanoke Shoots Just 25.7 Percent in Second in 17-Point Loss to VWC

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA--The road finally caught up with the Roanoke College men’s basketball team, as the Maroons lost to Virginia Wesleyan College, 77-60, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons, who were playing their fourth road game in the past week, fall to 12-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference play. The Marlins are now 4-9 and 2-6 against league opponents. Roanoke, which is ranked 15th in the nation, went into halftime leading 38-37, but shot just 25.7 percent from the field in the second half and was outscored 40-22 by the Marlins in the closing frame. An 11-0 VWC run from the 11:15 mark of the second until the 8:41 mark, put the Marlins up to stay. After the Marlins grabbed the 56-46 lead, the Maroons cut the advantage to just six points, but the Marlins hits 14 free throws in the final four minutes of the contest, pushing the margin to 17 points.
Brad Dunleavy (Roanoke, VA/William Fleming) led the Maroons with 15 points in the contest, while Ramsey Hathaway (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and Jason Strickland (Charlottesville, VA/Covenant) each netted 10. Strickland grabbed 11 boards, a game-high, posting his third consecutive double-double.
Tim Petrillo paced all scorers in the game, dropping in 24 on 8-of-20 shooting from the field. The Marlins outscored Roanoke 18-6 from the free throw line and committed just 13 turnovers in the game. Petrillo had seven points during VWC’s run in the second half.
Roanoke returns home, for the first time since January 5th, on Wednesday as it hosts Guilford College in another ODAC contest.
