Two Maroons Get All-American Honors
Bonasera and McIlvain Each Get Honorable Mention Status
SALEM, VA-Roanoke College sophomore Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) and junior Russell McIlvain (Gladwyne, PA/Holderness) were both named USILA Division III Honorable Mention men’s lacrosse All-Americans on Tuesday. The honor is Bonasera’s second in as many years, while McIlvain earns his first ever spot on an All-American team. Bonasera was Roanoke’s leading scorer for the second straight year, finishing the 2001 season with 61 points on 32 goals and 29 assists. He set a school and Old Dominion Athletic Conference record when he recorded 14 points in a win over Pfeiffer University. In just two seasons, Bonasera has moved into 17th place on Roanoke’s all-time scoring list. He was a First Team All-ODAC selection this season and was a Third Team All-American a year ago.
McIlvain emerged as Roanoke’s top defender in 2001, earning a spot on the ODAC’s First Team All-Star squad. The junior finished the season second on the club in groundballs, but first in groundballs during conference play. He tallied a career-high 11 GBs in a win on the road over Guilford College.
The Roanoke men’s lacrosse team finished the season with an 8-6 overall record and a 3-3 mark in league action. The Maroons return all but six players (graduation) next season and see four of their top five scorers return as well as four of their top five defensemen.
