Three Named to All-Conference Squad

Fasanaro, Fleming, and Devine All Honored

SALEM, Va.--Roanoke College men’s lacrosse players Gregg Fasanaro (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville), Brian Fleming (Summit, NJ/Summit), and Doug Devine (Hingham, MA/Boston College) were all named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Second Team All-Star squad on Thursday afternoon. The three played for a Maroon squad that finished the 1999 season with a 5-9 record and a 3-3 mark in conference play.

Fasanaro, a First Team All-Conference selection in 1998, finished the year second on the team in scoring with 22 goals and nine assists for 31 points. His 22 goals were the Roanoke high-water mark as were his four extra-man tallies (there was a three way tie in that category). Fasanaro, a junior, was switched from attack to midfield before the start of the season, and after getting off to a ‘slow’ start he was moved back to his natural position of attack, where he was chosen for this year’s team. In the team’s final four games of the season, Fasanaro exploded for 12 goals, including a career-high five in a 10-4 win over Marymount University.

Fleming, a senior, was a consistent player for the Maroons in the midfield in 1999, starting all 14 games, one of just two players to do so. Fleming was the Maroons top face-off man during thee year, winning well over 50 percent of his draws. He also had 15 goals and four assists for 19 points on the year. Five times during the season he scored at least two goals in a game, including a three-goal game in a loss to Cortland State. Perhaps his biggest goal of the year came in a win over Connecticut College. With the score tied at 11 and just seven second remaining in regulation, Fleming beat the CC goalkeeper to give the Maroons a 12-11 upset win.

The only other Maroon to start all 14 games in 1999, Devine was a stalwart on the defensive end of the field. Devine, a senior co-captain, led the 1999 Roanoke team in groundballs, recording 48 on the year. This is the first time in his Roanoke career that Devine has been selected to the All-Conference team. Just as good off the field as he was on, Devine was a finalist for Roanoke College’s 1999 Paul W. Rice Award, given to the RC senior student-athlete that made a significant contribution to campus life.
