Maroons Drop First of the Season

#13 Cortland Betters #14 RC, 10-6

SALEM, VA--The Cortland State dominance of the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team continued on Wednesday as the Red Dragons defeated the Maroons, 10-6, to win their third consecutive meeting in the series. The Maroons entered the game as the nation’s 14th ranked squad, while Cortland State came in just one spot behind at #13. Roanoke drops to 2-1 on the season, while Cortland State ends its travels through Virginia with a 2-0 record. Cortland State defeated Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.

The Maroons, playing for the first time in over a week, came out flat and spotted the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, before they managed their first goal with just 54 seconds left in the opening frame. Cortland State opened up the scoring with 11:22 to go and then took its 2-0 lead with 5:40 left in the first on a goal from Craig Degnan (Rockville Center, NY/South Side), his first of five in the contest. The Maroons tied the score with just 14 ticks left in the frame, a goal by senior midfielder Mike Jones (Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee). Jones’ goal came on Roanoke’s third shot of the quarter.

The Red Dragons got four of the five goals in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Degnan scored two of the four CS goals in the second, including one with 1:09 to go, a man-up tally. Each team converted one extra-man opportunity in the contest. At the half, Cortland State held a sizable 31-8 lead in the shot department.

Trailing by three coming out of the break, the Maroons got things going in the third, scoring the first three goals to tie the score at six with 5:45 to play in the frame. Freshman midfielder Colin Burke (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) scored two of the RC goals in the early stages of the third and finished the game with three, his first career collegiate hat trick. The score would not remain tied for long however, as Cortland State scored just 59 second later to take the lead for good. The Red Dragons outscored RC 3-0 in the final quarter to make the final score 10-6.

Degnan finished with five goals and two assists, and also got the game-winning goal late in the third quarter. Cortland’s Rob McKeefrey (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) had a goal and two assists. The Red Dragon goalie, Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), had an easy day in the cage, making just three saves. He faced just 21 RC shots on the day. Cortland reeled off 51 shots at the RC net.

Roanoke’s preseason All-American goalie Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) was the main reason RC stayed close, making 15 saves in 58 minutes of work. Many of his saves were on point-blank shots. Burke finished with three goals, while two Maroons, Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) and Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) each had two assists.
