SALEM, VA--David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) scored with just 1:35 left in the game to give the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team a 13-12 victory over visiting Greensboro College on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons, ranked 15th in the country in this week’s national poll, improve to 7-3 on the season. The Pride fall to 3-7 on the season. The Maroons had just killed off a penalty when goalkeeper Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) started a Roanoke clear that resulted in Taylor’s game-winning tally. Morse found freshman midfielder Mark Pano (Braintree, MA/Tabor) near the center line. Pano raced unmarked into the Greensboro end, where he found Taylor on the left side of the cage. Taylor then proceeded to score his third goal of the game and 24th of the season.
The Pride had made a strong comeback after trailing by three goals at the half and by as many as four in the game. The Maroons took an 11-8 lead into the break, but were able to score just two goals in the second half. Greensboro’s Trevor Shattuck tied the score at 12 with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter, capping the comeback.
Greensboro scored the game’s first goal, just 40 seconds in after the Maroons were called for a 30 second penalty just after the opening face-off. Roanoke found itself trailing 4-3 in the first, before ripping off the next five goals to take an 8-4 lead halfway through the second. Greensboro closed to within one goal (9-8) late in the second, but Neil Adam (Murrysville, PA/Franklin) and Taylor scored nine seconds apart to give RC the 11-8 intermission lead.
Jim Cappellett (Little River, SC/Vestal) led the Maroon offensive day, recording three goals and two assists. Cappellett recorded his five points on the day he was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Taylor finished with three goals, while sophomore Bryan Daddio (Winchester, MA/Winchester) had a career-high two goals. Morse made 12 stops in the RC cage.
Mars Anguiano and Chieu Lam each scored three times to top the Pride’s scoring column. The pair was joined atop the list by Bill Zopp and John Neff who each had two goals and an assist in the losing effort. GC keeper Michael Cappe made 16 saves.
The Maroons host Virginia Wesleyan College at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon. Heading into Monday’s action Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan were both 2-1 in ODAC play. VWC plays at Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday.
