Maroons Fall to Gettysburg, 16-3
Kamerdin Scores Twice and Adds an Assist
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team lost to the Gettysburg College Bullets today, 16-3, at Alumni Field on the campus of Roanoke College. The Maroons fall to 0-2 on the season, and have lost their first two games of the year for the first time since the 1991 season. Gettysburg, which was ranked as high as fifth in the nation in preseason polls, returns to Pennsylvania with a 2-0 record. Roanoke allowed four Gettysburg goals in each of the four quarters, and could only manage a goal in the second and two in the fourth themselves in the loss. The Bullets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game’s first five minutes, and never looked back. Gettysburg scored the first eight goals of the contest before Roanoke could make its mark on the scoreboard. That tally came with just 39 seconds remaining in the first half as Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) found the back of the net for the third time this season.
The Maroons were held scoreless in the third quarter, as the Bullets extended the lead to 12-1 at the end of the frame. They spread the margin to 13-1 with the first goal of the closing period, but Kamerdin’s second goal of the contest, with 12:29 left on the clock, ended the Gettysburg scoring run. The Maroons capped the game scoring as Kamerdin earned his third point of the day, assisting on David Taylor’s (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s School) second lamp-lighter of the year.
Face-offs and shots were two areas that Gettysburg dominated in the contest. The Bullets outshot Roanoke, 44-15, and won 17 of the game’s 21 face-offs. The Bullets were, however, unable to score on six extra-man opportunities, while Roanoke was scoreless on its one try.
Evan Kaplow (Chappaqua, NY/Chappaqua) started between the pipes for Roanoke, finishing the day with 13 saves. His Gettysburg counterpart was forced to stop just five shots on the afternoon.
Roanoke’s three goals are its lowest total since a 1990 season-opening loss to Duke University, 11-3. The Maroons have also lost their first two games of the year for the first time since the 1991 campaign, a year in which they actually started 0-3 (Duke, Salisbury St., and Washington & Lee).
The Bullets tied a series record for largest margin of victory (13 goals). In the two teams’ first ever meeting, in 1984, the Maroons outscored Gettysburg, 17-4. The previous six meetings in this series had been determined by three goals or less, including three contests that had a one-goal difference.
Roanoke looks to rebound from today’s loss on Wednesday, as it plays host to Cortland State (NY) in a game at Roanoke’s Alumni Field that is scheduled to face-off at 1:00 pm.
