Weeren Scores Six in Opener

Maroons Beat Greensboro, 14-6, in First Game of 2001

GREENSBORO, NC--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team opened up its 2001 season with a 14-6 road win over the Pride of Greensboro College on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons, who are ranked 16th in the Face-Off Magazine preseason national poll, improve to 1-0 on the season and 6-1 all-time versus the Pride. Host Greensboro falls to 0-2 on the year.

Sophomore midfielder Joe Weeren (Winchester, MA/Winchester), coming off of a freshman season in which he scored six goals, led the Maroons to the win on Wednesday, scoring six goals. Weeren’s six-goal outburst was the most by a Roanoke player since Jason Davenport scored six in a 1998 win over Washington College.

The Maroons built a 6-2 lead at halftime, and outscored the Pride, 8-4, in the second half to pull off the eight-goal victory. Roanoke’s eight-goal victory was its largest season-opening win since a 20-4 win over Catawba in 1997.

Seniors David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) and Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) each scored three goals for the Maroons. The game was Kamerdin’s first varsity action for the Maroons since the 1999 season. In their first collegiate games, freshmen Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) and Colin Burke (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) each scored a goal for the winning Maroons.

Preseason All-American goalie Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) made 12 saves in the Maroon net. Morse faced 37 Greensboro shots in the game; the Maroons were also able to get 37 shots off. James Canedy (E. Orleans, MA/Falmouth Academy) and Neil Adam (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) each added multiple assists for the Maroons.

The Maroons head to Florida this weekend and will play the Saxons of Alfred University on March 6th in Orlando, FL. The game in Florida begins at 1:00pm.
