Maroons Can't Beat #12 Hampden-Sydney

RC Falls to 5-5, 0-3 After 12-7 Loss

SALEM, VA-The Hampden-Sydney College Tigers, ranked 12th in the nation in Division III men’s lacrosse, defeated the Roanoke College Maroons for the second time in Salem, VA in as many tries, beating the Maroons, 12-7 , in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers also pulled out a 9-3 victory in Salem during the 1999 season. The Tigers improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Maroons fall to 5-5, 0-3 and need to win their three remaining conference games to avoid their first losing ODAC season.

The Tigers never trailed in the contest, scoring six of the first seven goals. John Neely opened the scoring for the Tigers with just over 13 minutes to play in the first quarter. Wilson McIlwaine made the score 2-0 in HSC’s favor with 9:39 to play, and Neely added one just 30 seconds later. After Chris Lucas scored the first of his game-high four goals, Roanoke’s Andy Bonasera beat HSC keeper Scott Fava to make the score 4-1 after one. The Tigers scored the first two goals of the second period and were later up 7-2 when the Maroons made a late push. The Maroons scored three goals in the final 3:33 of the half, sending the game into the intermission with a score of 7-5 in HSC’s favor. Kris Davis got that run going for the Maroons, scoring his ninth goal of the year.

The Maroons made the game very interesting in the third when David Taylor scored with 8:57 on the clock, on an assist from Davis to make the score 7-6. Hampden-Sydney put the Maroons away, however, scoring the next four goals. Lucas scored two of those tallies for the Tigers, who are now 5-19 all-time against Roanoke. After Taylor scored, the Maroons did not make a dent on the scoreboard again until there was just 5:49 left in the game, a goal from Bonasera, his third of the game.

Making the most of their opportunities, the Tigers outshot the Maroons by just one, 31-30, but held a key 13-9 advantage in the face-off column. Fava made 10 saves in goal for the Tigers, who were 2-for-5 in man-up situations. Lucas finished with four goals and three assists for HSC, which also got two goals from Neely, Phil Dick, and McIlwaine.

Davis finished with a goal and three assists for the Maroons. Tim Morse stopped 11 Hampden-Sydney shots on the afternoon, giving him 311 for his career, just two shy of tying RC’s ninth all-time leader.
