Maroons Fall To Hampden-Sydney, 9-3

Roanoke Can't Overcome Strong HSC Defense

SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team could not overcome a stifling Hampden-Sydney Tiger defense today, dropping an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest, 9-3. The Maroons drop to 3-7 on the season, and 2-3 in league action, while the win gives HSC an 8-2 mark, 3-0 in the conference. The three goals scored by Roanoke were the lowest total by a team in this series since the Tigers managed just one in 1984. The win was also just the fourth ever for HSC over the Maroons (4-18).

The game went without a goal for nearly 11 minutes of the first quarter, until Russell Carter scored for HSC with 4:16 to go. The Tigers regained possession of the ball later in the period, and scored the game’s second goal with only three ticks left in the first. Hampden-Sydney recorded the only goal of the second period to increase its lead to 3-0 at the break.

In the third period, HSC extended its lead to four, with 12:53 left, on a Doug Palmer goal and just 43 seconds later made the score 5-0. Roanoke finally was able to crack the Tiger goaltender with 5:23 remaining in the third, as David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) took a pass from behind the cage, from Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay), and fired it into the net. Roanoke’s momentum gained from the Taylor goal was short-lived, however, as the Tigers struck back with a goal of their own just 11 seconds later. They added one more in the third to make the score 7-1.

The Tigers scored the first two goals of the fourth period, both extra-man tallies. The Maroons closed out the scoring in the game, late in the fourth, as Jim Cappellett (Little River, SC/Vestal) and Neil Adam (Murrysville, PA/Franklin) recorded goals. Eav Kaplow (Chappaqua, NY/Chappaqua) made 14 saves in the net fopr Roanoke.

Roanoke returns to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Ohio Wesleyan University, which is currently ranked 11th in the country. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm on Alumni Field in Salem, VA.
