It Takes 2 OTs, But RC Wins

Neil Adam Scores with 3:24 Left in Second Overtime, RC Beats LC

SALEM, VA--In a driving rainstorm, junior Neil Adam (Murrysville, PA/Franklin) scored with 3:24 left in the second overtime to give the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team a 12-11 victory over the Lynchburg College Hornets on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons, who now own a 21-0 lead in the all-time series with the Hornets, improve to 3-2 on the season, 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Hornets fall to 3-2, 0-1.

Bart Rommell (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) won the face-off to open up the second overtime period, giving the Maroons the possession they would score off of. Senior Gregg Fasanaro (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) found Adam wide open in the middle of the field. Adam fired a shot past Lynchburg goalie Mike Huck (Towson, MD/Loch Raven). The goal was Adam’s second of the day, while the assist gave Fasanaro a four point afternoon (two goals, two assists). Huck made eight saves in the Hornet net.

The game went into overtime as a result of a goal by Lynchburg’s Jason Jeffries (Alexandria, VA/Edison) with just 45 seconds left in the fourth period. Jeffries had three goals on the day to pace all Hornet players.

The Maroons squandered a 9-6 halftime lead, being outscored by the Hornets, 5-2 in the second half. The Maroons jumped on LC early, scoring five goals in the first period and taking as much as a four-goal lead. After LC’s Joe Matta (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) made the score 5-3, Fasanaro opened up the second quarter scoring a goal on the Roanoke man-up attack. After a Roanoke penalty put the Maroons a man-down, Fasanaro scored his second goal in just over a minute, taking a field-long pass from RC keeper Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) and finding the back of the net. Morse, who also made 23 saves in goal for the Maroons, was credited with an assist on the play.

Lynchburg made a run in the second half, scoring four of the final five goals in regulation to tie the score at 11. Just as the Hornets were making their comeback, the ‘sskies opened up,’ and the rain came down. The two overtime periods were played in the driving rain.

Roanoke plays at Washington & Lee on Wednesday afternoon in another Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. The game in Lexington, VA starts at 3:30.
