Roanoke Upsets 10th Ranked Lynchburg, 8-7
Fasanaro Scores Game-Winner, Kaplow Stops 21
SALEM, Va.--Gregg Fasanaro’s (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) goal with 4:56 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team upset the Lynchburg College Hornets on Wednesday, 8-7. The Maroons improve to 3-5 on the season, 2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, and continue their dominance over the Hornets. Roanoke is now 20-0 all-time against Lynchburg, which entered today’s game ranked 10th in the STX/USILA Division III national poll, a streak that dates back to 1980. Fasanaro’s goal came as the Hornets were making a fourth quarter comeback attempt. The Maroons took a 5-2 lead after the first period, and a 6-3 lead heading into halftime. The Maroons scored the only goal of the third period, a tally by Brian Fleming (Summit, NJ/Summit), his second of the game. However, the Hornets scored the first four goals of the fourth period to cut Roanoke’s lead to just 7-6 with 6:04 left to play. Fasanaro then scored his unassisted goal to give RC the 8-6 lead. Lynchburg scored with 4:10 remaining, but the Maroon defense held from there on out.
The Maroons came out the gates firing, scoring four of the game’s first five goals. Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) scored first for RC. The Hornets tied the score at one, but Jim Cappellett’s (Little River, SC/Vestal) first of the season started a run of three straight for Roanoke. Kamerdin scored again, and Dimitri Cafuoco (Islip, NY/Islip) followed with one of his own to make the score 4-1 in favor of RC. After the Hornets put another on the scoreboard, Roanoke’s David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) closed out the scoring with his 11th of the year.
Despite being outshot, 38-27, in the contest, the Maroons claimed the victory, a fact that can be attributed to the outstanding goaltending of senior Evan Kaplow (Chappaqua, NY/Chappaqua). Kaplow finished the day with 21 saves, making 11 in the first half and 10 in the second. His total falls just one saves short of his career-high of 22.
