Maroons Get 10-4 Win in Home Finale

Pilat Picks Up Career Win Number 100

SALEM, Va.--Gregg Fasanaro (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) scored a career-high five goals to lead the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team to a 10-4 victory over the Marymount University Saints on Saturday afternoon. With the win Roanoke improves to 5-8 on the season, while Marymount falls to 6-7. The victory is also the 100th in the head coaching career of Roanoke’s Bill Pilat.

By himself, Fasanaro outscored the entire Marymount team, nearly pulling off the feat in a one minute span of the second period. Marymount was clinging to a 1-0 lead in the second period, after scoring the lone goal of the first quarter, when Fasanaro tied the score at one just 1:52 into the frame. The goal was an extra-man tally after a MU player was sent to the box for a slash. The junior then put the Maroons up, 2-1, with his second just 32 seconds later. He then put in his third goal, exactly one minute after the first, after beating his defender in a one-on-one move. Following Fasanaro’s offensive exploits, the Saints scored two consecutive goals to knot the score at three.

The Maroons then got a sign that it would be their day. After the Saints lost the ball out of bounds in their offensive zone with just seven seconds left in the half, Roanoke goaltender Evan Kaplow (Chappaqua, NY/Chappaqua) started a fast-break that ended up with a Keith Cozzens (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) goal with just 1.5 seconds left on the clock. The play took just two passes: one from Kaplow to Brian Fleming (Summit, NJ/Summit) at the mid-field stripe, and one from Fleming to Cozzens. Cozzens, who was almost 30 yards away from the MU cage, fired a shot that beat the Saint goalie to the upper left corner of the net.

After Jeb Burrows (Wayne, PA/Haverford) made the score 5-3 in Roanoke’s favor just 51 seconds into the third, the Saints struck back with their own goal with 9:10 remaining, a goal that proved to be their last of the game. The Maroons closed out the game on a 5-0 run, with goals coming from Fleming, Burrows, Ryan Scaffe (Towson, MD/Severna Park), and two more from Fasanaro.

In addition to Fasanaro’s career-best five tallies, the story of this game was once again the Roanoke defense. For the second consecutive outing, the defensive unit turned in an outstanding performance, holding the Saints to just four goals, just one in the second half. Roanoke held just a one-goal lead at the half, 4-3, but thanks to the strong defensive play, was able to outscore MU, 6-1, in the final two periods.

Roanoke outshot Marymount, 43-22 on the day, and won 14 of the game’s 18 face-offs. While limiting the Saints to just a 1-for-8 performance on the extra-man attack, Roanoke scored three of its own on the man-up situation, in just six attempts.

Already the winningest coach in Roanoke men’s lacrosse history, head coach Bill Pilat picked up his 100th career victory with the win. Now in his 11th season at the helm of the Maroon program, Pilat has compiled a 100-56 record (.641). He is the first coach in RC men’s lacrosse history to reach the 100-win plateau.

Roanoke will close out its 1999 regular season schedule on Wednesday in a game at Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC. The game is scheduled to get under way at 3:30 pm.
