Maroons Fall to 3-8 With 15-11 Loss to OWU
Roanoke Can't Overcome 5-2 First Period Deficit
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team fell to the 11th ranked Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops on Sunday afternoon, 15-11. The Maroons drop to 3-8 on the year. The Bishops improve to 5-3 in the 1999 campaign and claim their 11th all-time victory in the series, against just four losses. Roanoke struck first, just 29 seconds into the contest, on a goal coming off the stick of Jim Cappellett (Little River, SC/Vestal). After James Canedy (E. Orleans, MA/Falmouth) won the opening face-off, he took the ball to the left side of the cage and found a wide-open Cappellett who then scored his fourth goal in three games. Thelead would be th only the Maroons would have all game. Six minutes after the RC strike, Ohio Wesleyan’s Evan Dunne scored the first of his five goals, and the first of three consecutive. After scoring his three straight goals, Dunne added an assist on Jim Papczynski’s tally with 2:24 left in the first. Gregg Fasanaro (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) stopped the OWU run at the 1:07 mark, but the Bishops added their fifth goal of the opening frame with just nine seconds left.
After Ohio Wesleyan’s Scott Jackson scored the first goal of the second quarter, Roanoke answered with two of its own, from David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) and Fasanaro, but OWU scored three of the next four goals in the period. Taylor added his second of the frame, with 2:21 to go, sending the Maroons into the half trailing by four scores, 9-5.
Roanoke cut into the OWU lead in the third by scoring two goals and not allowing the Bishops to get on the board for nearly 11 minutes of the period. After suffering through the first 10:51 of the third without a goal, OWU scored three in the final 4:09, including two in the last 32 seconds to repel the Roanoke charge. Dunne added his fifth goal of the game in the OWU run.
The fourth period saw the first three goals scored come on the extra-man attack, two by RC and one by the Bishops. With 8:11 to play in the game, Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) took a rebound off of an OWU save and scored his first of the game. Just seven seconds after Kamerdin’s goal, the Bishops were called for a penalty, sending RC against to the man-up. Brian Fleming (Summit, NJ/Summit) took advantage, scoring at the 7:36 mark to cut the lead to four, 13-9. Off of the ensuing face-off, which was won by Ohio Wesleyan, Bishop defender Zach Gagel scooped the ball and shot at the RC net. Fortunately for RC the shot hit the post, but unfortunately the ball caromed directly to OWU midfielder Ian Cramsey who proceeded to score OWU’s 14th goal.
Fasanaro scored three times and added an assist in the game, while RC keeper Evan Kaplow (Chappaqua, NY/Chappaqua) made 17 saves in the net. With those 17 stops, Kaplow moves into a tie for eighth on Roanoke’s all-time list with 313 career saves.
Roanoke closes out its home portion of the schedule on Saturday, hosting Marymount University in a 2:00 pm contest.
