Bonasera Has 14 Points in 26-3 Win

Sophomore Sets New School Record in Win Over Pfeiffer

SALEM, VA-Roanoke College sophomore Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) set a single-game school scoring record, scoring 14 points on eight goals and six assists to lead the men’s lacrosse team to a 26-3 win over visiting Pfeiffer University. Bonasera’s 14 points break the old record of 13 which was held by both Brett Smith and Paul Goldsmith. With the win on Tuesday, the Maroons improve to 5-4 on the season and end a three-game losing streak. Pfeiffer falls to 3-4 on the season and remains winless in eight all-time meetings with Roanoke. The 26 goals also mark the most by a Maroon squad since a 40-6 win over Virginia Wesleyan in 1993.

The Maroons jumped on the Falcons quick and often in the first period, scoring just eight seconds into the game and eight times before the first period time ran out. Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) got the Maroons’ first goal of the game, taking an assist from Bonasera. Bonasera would score Roanoke’s second tally and assist on the third. By the end of the first period of play, Bonasera had three goals and two assists and by half tallied four goals and three helpers.

The Maroons scored the game’s first 13 goals before Pfeiffer made a dent on the scoreboard on a goal by Brent Ries. David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) scored an extra-man goal with just 40 seconds left in the half to make the score 14-1 at the break. Things were much the same in the second half, with Roanoke dominating play, scoring the first two goals of the half before yielding PU’s second score midway through the third. Roanoke scored thee next 10 goals of the game, pushing the lead to 26-2. Pfeiffer scored with 1:02 to go in the game to make the final margin 23 goals.

The Maroons had 18 shots in each of the first three periods and finished the game with 70, compared to Pfeiffer’s 27. The Maroons also had 74 groundballs and won 25 of the game’s 32 face-offs. Roanoke’s Bart Rommel (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) was a key factor in the Maroons controlling the pace of the game. Rommel won 16 of his 21 face-offs in the game and also finished with a goal and two assists.

Kamerdin scored five times and added three assists for the Maroons, who also got two goals each from Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford), Colin Burke (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) and Taylor. Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) made 13 stops for the Maroons, while Karl Getschel (Lutherville, MD/St. Paul’s) stopped six shots for the Maroons in the fourth quarter.
