Maroons End Year With 24-12 Win

SALEM, VA-The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team ended its season in style on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College 24-12. The Maroons, who improve to 25-1 all-time against RMC, end the season with an 8-6 record, 3-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference contests. Randolph-Macon, which has not beaten Roanoke since the series’ first ever game in 1972, fall to 4-7 on the season, 1-4 in league play. Leading 10-6 at the half, the Maroons allowed the Yellow Jackets to close to within one goal, 11-10, early in the third period. Randolph-Macon’s Hugh Purvis sparked Macon’s comeback, scoring two of the team’s four goals in the first six minutes of the third. The Maroons, however, quickly put an end to that run, scoring the game’s next six goals and 13 of the next 14 to break the game wide open. The Maroons scored six times in the final 8:35 of the third period and added seven more goals in the fourth before the Yellow Jackets were able to find the back of the net again, that with just 58 seconds to play.
The game opened up with the teams trading the first eight goals With the scored tied at four in the first, Roanoke’s Joe Weeren scored a goal, one of five in the game for the sophomore, with just 26 seconds left in the first to give the Maroons a lead they would never lose. The Maroons would extend their lead to as much as 10-5 in the first half.
Roanoke’s All-American candidate Andy Bonasera finished the game with six goals and two assists. The sophomore completed the season with 32 goals and 28 assists for 60 points. After recording 56 as a freshman, Bonasera now stands at 114 career points, the 20th best number in team history. Senior Ryan Kamerdin finished with three goals and four assists, as did freshman Kris Davis. Kamerdin completed his career just two points shy of 100 for his career. David Taylor, another of RC’s seniors, finished with three goals on the afternoon.
Purvis finished the contest with three goals and an assist, while sophomore Hunter Price scored five times on the Roanoke defense. Sophomore FJ Federico, who faced 58 Roanoke shots, had 12 saves on the afternoon.
