Roanoke Survives Villa Julie

Weeren and Bonasera Each Score Three in 10-7 Win

SALEM, VA-The 12th ranked Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team survived a scare from the Villa Julie Mustangs on Wednesday afternoon, winning a tight game by the final count of 10-7 in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 4-1 on the season, while Villa Julie falls to 3-2 on the season. The game was the first ever meeting between the two squads.

Villa Julie jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Travis Williams and Dan Velez. The Maroons were able to crack Mustang keeper Pat Gill with 3:39 to go in the first and tied the score early in the second on a goal by freshman Garrett Yaralian (Fripp Island, SC/Mt Lakes (NJ)). After another Velez goal made the score 3-2, Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) netted his second tally of the game with 3:28 to go in the half to make the score 3-3 at the break. The goal would be the first of six straight by the Maroons.

Five of those six straight tallies came in the third period, giving the Maroons an 8-3 lead at one point. Sophomore Joe Weeren (Winchester, MA/Winchester) scored three of Roanoke’s five goals in the third period, including one on the man-up attack. The Mustangs cut the lead to 8-4 heading into the fourth with an extra-man goal of their own with 1:21 left in the third.

Villa Julie scored the first two goals of the final stanza to cut the gap to 8-6, before the Maroons scored two of their own to make the score 10-6. Bonasera scored his third goal of the game in the fourth, while freshman Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) tallied his second helper. Velez helped the Mustangs get one goal closer, assisting on a goal by Nick Brownlee with just under five to play.

The difference in the game turned out to be Villa Julie keeper Pat Gill who finished the game with 24 saves. The Maroons held a sizable 57-35 edge in the shot department and also out-groundballed the Mustangs, 73-46.

Bonasera and Weeren each tallied three times for the Maroons, Bonasera adding an assist. Davis scored once and added an assist for the Maroons, who got 15 saves from goalie Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor).

Velez finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Bob Rinehimer found the back of the net twice and assisted on another VJC goal.

Roanoke travels to Lynchburg College on Saturday to square off with the Hornets in a 2:00pm contest.
