SALEM, VA--Art Hamilton (Alexandria, VA/Robert E. Lee) scored the game winning goal with 5:31 left in the fourth period to lift the Virginia Wesleyan men’s lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over Roanoke College on Saturday. Roanoke falls to 7-4 with the loss, 2-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while VWC improves to 7-5, 3-2. Hamilton’s goal capped a three-goal comeback by the Marlins who trailed 10-7 with over 10 minutes remaining in the game. Hamilton’s game-winning tally came just 16 seconds after he had tied the score at 10 with one of his game-high four goals. After being shutout in the game’s first half, Hamilton scored once in the third and three more times in the fourth.
Both teams came back from deficits in the game. The Maroons trailed 6-3 at the break and fell behind by as many as four goals (7-3) before scoring seven consecutive times in the third and fourth periods. Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) scored on an assist from Jim Cappellett (Little River, SC/Vestal) with 4:51 to go in the third period to give RC an 8-7 lead. Mike Jones (Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee) scored two consecutive goals, the second at the 13:22 mark of the fourth period to give RC the 10-7 lead. The Maroons went scoreless the rest of the way.
Virginia Wesleyan goalie Jeff Trench (Rehoboth, DE/Cape Henlopen) made 18 saves for the Marlins, 11 coming in the second half. Bill Lingo (Rehoboth, DE/Cape Henlopen) scored three times for VWC, while Jay Smith (Babylon, NY/Stony Brook) had three helpers in the win.
Bonasera finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Taylor had three scores. RC’s Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) made 15 stops in goal.
The win was the second consecutive for the Marlins over the Maroons, both in Salem. The Maroons now hold a 9-2 in the all-time series. Roanoke hosts Guilford College at 3:30 on Wednesday afternoon on RC’s Alumni Field.
