Davis Scores Game-Winner in OT
Maroons Beat Virginia Wesleyan 14-13, Weeren Scores Four
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-Roanoke College freshman Kris Davis scored the game-winning goal with 2:29 remaining in overtime to give the men's lacrosse team a 14-13 win over host Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 6-6 on the season and 1-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Maroons controlled the ball for the entire overtime period after winning the frame's opening face-off. Early in the OT, the Maroons failed to score on the man-up attack after VWC player was called for a one-minute slash. However, with just over 2:30 left in the extra session a wild sequence of events occured that led to the game-winner. RC's Colin Burke shot on the VWC net and was stopped by the Marlin keeper. The ball bounced to the restraining line, where several players from each team fought for possesion. Roanoke's Garrett Yaralian finally gained control and was away on a mini fastbreak. Yaralian shot the ball, but it was again stopped by the VWC netminder. This time, however, the ball rebounded almost straight up in the air. Davis jumped for the ball and at the peak of his leap, caught and shot the ball in one motion. The ball went in and the Maroons had their 10th all-time win over VWC.
Roanoke entered the fourth quarter with an 11-8 lead after outscoring the Marlins, 5-2, in the third. Virginia Wesleyan battled back and managed to take a 13-12 lead late in the contest. Joe Weeren scored with a little over a minute left in regulation, sending the game into the four minute sudden death frame.
Weeren finished the game with four goals and two assists. Colin Burke scored four times for the Maroons, while Andy Bonasera scored twice and added an assist to bring his career point total to 102. Tim Morse had a solid day in cage for the Maroons, making 21 stops.
Roanoke heads to Greensboro, NC on Wednesday for a showdown with the Quakers of Guilford College. Guilford lost to Washington & Lee on Saturday by the final score of 24-1.
