Roanoke Upsets #8 Washington

Wereen Nets Game-Winner in Fourth, RC Noww 3-1

CHESTERTOWN, MD-The Washington College (2-3) men's lacrosse team was stunned by Roanoke College (3-1), 12-11, on Saturday, March 17th. Sophomore midfielder Joe Weeren (Winchester, MA/Winchester) scored the game-winner for Roanoke with 2:52 left in the fourth quarter to break the 11-11 tie. Washington peppered the Roanoke goal in the final moments, but could not score the equalizer.

The win was the sixth all-time for Roanoke over Washington College. The Shoremen lead the all-time series 17-6. Roanoke last beat Washington in 1998. The loss marks the third time this season that Washington College has fallen to a nationally ranked opponent.

The game was tight throughout, with the Maroons holding a slim 7-6 halftime lead. Washington seemed to pull away in the third, scoring four goals. Craig Rerntch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) scored at the 12:40 mark of the third to tie the game at seven. Nick Nyland (Chantilly, VA/Fairfax) followed with one of his three goals at the 12:24 mark. Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C, Milton Wright) and freshmen Steve Berger (Jessup, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) rounded out the third quarter scoring for the Shoremen.

At the start of the fourth the score was 10-8 in favor of Washington. The Shoremen seemed poised to take control of the game. Roanoke chipped away at the Shoremen lead. The first goal came at the 13:55 mark, from the stick of Garrett Yaralian (Fripp Island, SC/Mt. Lakes). The Maroons went ahead on a goal by Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) with 11:03 left in the game. Nick Nyland tallied his third, and tied the game for Washington at 11.

The game remained deadlocked, until Joe Weeren tossed in game winner with 2:52 left. Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, NY/John Jay) assisted him. Washington pressured the Roanoke goal in the final moments, but Maroon goalie Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor Academy) turned away the Shoremen rush. He finished the day with 12 saves.

Washington College is ranked eighth in the latest USILA/STX Division III national poll. Roanoke was ranked 13th.

The Shoremen will host Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, March 21st. Face off is at 3:30 p.m.
