Maroons Fall to Washington, 9-5
Jim Cappellett Scores Twice for the Maroons (2-2)
SALEM, VA--The Washington College men’s lacrosse, ranked number seven in the country, got four goals and one assist from Jon Fellows as the Shoremen picked up a 9-5 victory over the Roanoke College Maroons on Saturday afternoon. Washington improves to 2-2 on the season, while the Maroons see their record fall to a similar 2-2. The victory was the third consecutive for the Shoremen over Roanoke, dating back to the 1996 season. The Maroons jumped out on top 2-0 in the first half on goals by Jim Cappellett and Neil Adam. After Chris Johnson cut the lead in half with a goal at the 3:38 mark, the Maroons pushed the lead back to two on a goal from freshman Andy Bonasera with just 28 seconds left in the first.
Washington dominated the second period, scoring four unanswered goals in the period to take a 5-3 lead into half. The Maroons managed just one shot on goal in the second half, while Fellows and Nick Nylund scored two goals apiece in the frame for the Shoremen.
Cappellett scored the only goal of the third period to bring the Maroons to within 5-4, but Washington College would score four of the final five goals including three straight to close out the game.
Roanoke goalie Tim Morse made 10 saves for the Maroons, while his Washington counterpart, Ray Pagano, matched him save for save. Pagano kept the Shoremen in the game in the first period making five stops, while Morse stopped four in the second period of action.
In addition Fellows’ five-point day, Nyland finished with three goals and an assist for Washington, while Johnson added two tallies. Roanoke’s Andy Bonasera and David Taylor each scored a goal and handed out two assists.
Roanoke has the week off and will return to action on Saturday, March 25th, when it hosts Lynchburg College in a 1:00 pm contest on Alumni Field in Salem, VA.
