Maroons Drop 13-12 Decision to Whittier

Burke Scores Four, Weeren Three, Last Second Chance Stopped

SALEM, VA-The Whittier (CA) College Poets pulled out a tight 13-12 decision over the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team in Salem, VA on Wednesday afternoon. The Poets improve to 7-3 on the season and tie the all-time series at one, while the Maroons fall to 5-6 on the season and drop their fourth home contest of the season.

The highlight of the game turned out to be the final two minutes. Whittier’s Ryder Bateman scored with 1:39 left in the contest to make the score 13-11 in favor of the Poets. Roanoke’s Ryan Kamerdin responded just 25 seconds later (1:14 left) to bring the Maroons within one. The Poets won the ensuing face-off, but quickly lost the ball to the Maroons. Roanoke could not, however, establish the ball in the attack zone. Whittier gained possession and was content to run out the clock in its own attack zone. However, a Whittier attackman was called for a ward and the Maroons regained possession. Again, however, following the whistle calling the ward, a Roanoke player was called for a one-minute slashing penalty, giving the ball back to WC with 29 seconds to play. The Poets worked the ball around on the man-up situation and with just eight seconds took a shot that hit the side of the net. Roanoke goalie Tim Morse quickly scooped the ball and flung it to midfield where Roanoke’s Andy Bonasera caught it with just over four seconds left, ran into the RC attack zone and fired shot from about 15 yards out that was saved as the buzzer sounded by WC keeper Adam Messick.

The Poets led by a goal at the half, but outscored Roanoke, 5-3, in the third to take an 11-8 lead heading into the fourth. The Maroons were able to come within one goal three times in the fourth, but each time the Poets withstood the charge. The Maroons had actually taken the lead in the third quarter, 7-6, after scoring the first two goals of the frame.

Roanoke quickly dug itself a hole in the game, getting a one-minute penalty just eight seconds in. The Poets capitalized on that man-up situation and would add another ‘power play’ goal later in the first. Roanoke tied the score at three after one, but could manage just two goals in the second.

Whittier’s Ryder Bateman scored five times in the contest, four of which came in the second half. Messick finished the contest with nine saves for the Poets, none bigger than the one as time expired in the game. Andrew Biers scored twice, while six other Poets added single goals.

Roanoke’s Bonasera scored twice and added three assists to bring his career point total to 99 in just 24 games. With one more point, Bonasera will become the 30th player in team history to reach the century mark. Colin Burke scored four times for the Maroons in the contest, while Joe Weeren scored three times.
