Maroons Place Seven on All-Conference Team
Five Get First Team Honors, Lechtrecker Co-Freshman of the Year
SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men’s soccer team placed seven players on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Star squad in a vote of league coaches. The Maroons, who finished the season with a 15-4-1 overall record, had five players named to the All-ODAC First Team, breaking the school record. The 1985 had the previous high of four. Highlighting RC’s selections were Todd Smith (Balitmore, MD/Loch Raven), Ryan Pflugrad (Columbia, MD/Hammond), Regi Francois (Springfield, VA/Washington International), Harold McConnell (Sussex, NJ/High Point Regional) and Chris Ebeling (Ellicott City, MD/Oakland Mills) who were all named to the First Team.
Smith was one of the top defenders in the conference this season. In addition to his six goals and six assists, Smith did the Maroons the ‘little things’ for the Maroons that never show up on paper. He set career highs in all offensive categories, including points (18).
Pflugrad, one of just two juniors on the squad, was the team’s leading scorer this season. In 20 games, Pflugrad scored 15 goals and had eight assists for 38 points. His point total was the highest since Dustin Fonder ’94 had 64 in 1993. Of his 15 goals, six were game-winners.
Francois was one of the league’s most dominant players this season. He was a close second in the RC scoring race, completing the season with 34 points on 14 goals and six assists. He scored four game-winning goals during the season and had RC’s only tally in the ODAC semifinal game against Virginia Wesleyan.
McConnell, a midfielder who finished the season with three goals and six assists, was vital to RC’s success this season. His control of the game in the middle of the field often created scoring opportunities for the Maroons and prevented scoring chances for the opposition. He garnered First Team honors this year after being named to the Honorable Mention team a season ago.
Just a freshman, Ebeling proved himself to be the league’s top goalkeeper this year. In 20 games, all of which he started, Ebeling allowed just 16 goals while stopping 70 shots. His performance against VWC in the ODAC tournament single-handily kept the Maroons in the contest, as he stopped 10 Marlin shots, three in overtime. He had the third best goals against average in the conference this season (0.88).
Freshman David Lechtrecker (Ellicott City, MD/Mt.Hebron) was RC’s lone selection to the Second Team and was also named the conference’s Co-Freshman of the Year. A forward, Lechtrecker scored seven goals and had eight assists in 18 games for the Maroons this season. Lechtrecker had one game-winning tally this season and set up Francois’ goal in the ODAC semifinal game.
Brandan Moffett (Laurel, MD/Laurel) was chosen to the ODAC’s Honorable Mention squad after a season in which he had three goals and six assists for 12 points.
