Maroons Drop First Home Contest

RC Falls to CNU, 1-0, Now 12-2 On the Year

SALEM, VA--A Christopher Newport goal with just 9:28 remaining in the game gave the Captains a 1-0 win over the Roanoke College soccer team on Tuesday in Salem, VA. With the loss, the Maroons, who are ranked 12th in the country and second in the South Region, fall to 12-2 on the season. The Captains, the fourth ranked team in the South Region, are now 12-1-1 on the year. The win was the second in three years for the Captains over the Maroons. Last season, the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

Captain senior Shadi Abi-Saab (New York, NY/Denbigh) scored the game’s lone goal with just 9:28 remaining to give CNU the win. After taking a flick-pass from junior Jason Farino (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton), Abi-Saab had little trouble getting the ball past RC keeper Chris Ebeling (Ellicott City, MD/Oakland Mills).

Ebeling was a big factor in keeping the Maroons in the game. Christopher Newport outshot RC, 15-6, on the day, but Ebeling made nine saves and let just the one shot past him. Of the Maroons’ six shots, perhaps the best scoring chance came early in the game as Blake MacKeen (Winston-Salem, NC/Forsyth Country Day) sent a shot just outside the far post.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday as they travel to Greensboro, NC to play the Pride of Greensboro College. The Pride is ranked 19th in this week’s Division III national coaches poll.
