SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men’s soccer team, which is ranked 20th in the country, opened up its 2000 Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule with a 4-0 win over visiting Emory & Henry College on Wednesday in Salem. The Maroons improve to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in ODAC play. The Wasps see their record drop to 0-2-2, 0-2 against ODAC opponents. Chas Torrence (Chattanooga, TN/Baylor School) opened up the Maroons’ scoring on Wednesday, heading in a crossing pass from ODAC Player of the Week Blake MacKeen (Winston-Salem, NC/Forsyth Country Day). The goal, which came just over two minutes into the game, was Torrence’s first of the season and the game-winner. MacKeen made the score 2-0 in RC’s favor with just over 19 minutes left in the half, while fellow sophomore Harold McConnell (Sussex, NJ/High Point Regional) scored the Maroons’ third goal of the first half. Torrence earned an assist on MacKeen’s goal, while senior back Todd Smith (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) was credited with a helper on both scores.
The Maroons controlled play for most of the game, outshooting the Wasps, 31-1. Neither RC keeper that played in the game was forced to make a save. The win was the fifth consecutive shutout for the Maroons and moved them to within one game of matching their best start in 10 years. After scoring just 31 goals all of last season, the Maroons have already sent 21 to the back of the net this year, and average of 4.2 goals per game.
The Maroons have a tough task on Saturday afternoon, as they host Mary Washington College at 2:00 pm. The Eagles head into the game just two spots behind RC in the regional rankings, occupying the number-five spot.
