SALEM, VA--Ryan Pflugrad (Columbia, MD/Hammond) scored two goals and Regi Francois (Springfield, VA/Washington International) added the other as the Roanoke College men’s soccer team improved to 11-1 with a 3-0 win over Guilford on Wednesday. The Maroons, who are ranked 17th in the nation this week, also improve to 6-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. Guilford falls to 6-6-1, 2-5 in league action. After a scoreless first half in which both goaltenders made some outstanding saves to keep the opposition off the board, the Maroons got their first strike in the 48th minute. Sophomore Brandan Moffett (Laurel, MD/Laurel) slipped a five-yard crossing pass to Pflugrad deep in the GC box. Pflugrad then toe-poked in a ‘layup’ for his team-leading ninth goal of the season. He would add his 10th goal in the 62nd minute, heading in a ball that was served by Chas Torrence (Chattanooga, TN/Baylor School) on a free kick.
Francois’ score came in between the two Pflugrad tallies, his at the 56:37 mark. Moffett also earned an assist on the Francois score, sending the ball into the box on a lead pass. Francois made a move around the GC keeper, who had come way off his line to attempt to prevent the shot, and scored his ninth of the season.
Guilford got off just six shots in the contest, compared to RC’s 17, but had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the game on a shot by Chris Newton (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry). Roanoke’s starting keeper Chris Ebeling (Ellicott City, MD/Oakland Mills) just got a finger-tip on the ball to deflect it over the crossbar.
Ebeling made two saves in the first half for the Maroons, while Joe Ghobrial (Bedford, VA/Holy Cross) stopped three Guilford shots over the final 19:22 of the contest.
The Maroons are at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday for a game that gets under way at 1:00.
