RC In Three Way Tie On Top Of ODAC

Maroons Beat Lynchburg, 3-0, Seedings Decided on Sunday

LYNCHBURG, VA--The Roanoke College men’s soccer team forced a three-way tie atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings with a 3-0 win over Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 8-1 against league opponents, and 14-4 overall. RC’s win means that the number-one seed for the ODAC tournament will be decided by drawing a name out of a hat on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons are tied with Washington & Lee and Virginia Wesleyan for the top spot in the ODAC standings. The ODAC office will conduct the drawing on Sunday, with the first name garnering the number one-seed. The number two and three seeds will then be determined on head-to-head results.

Todd Smith’s (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) goal with 35:03 remaining in the first half gave the Maroons the win on Saturday. After the LC defense failed to clear the ball, Smith fired a shot from about 20 yards out and found the lower right corner. Darren Eversole (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) staked the Maroons to a 2-0 halftime lead with his first goal of the season. Eversole took control of the ball in a crowd at the top of the Hornet box and put his shot in the same area as Smith’s.

Regi Francois (Springfield, VA/Washington International) scored Roanoke’s third goal of the game, his coming with 24:09 left. Earlier, Francois had tallied an assist on Eversole’s goal. The Maroons had the opportunity to score more goals, outshooting Lynchburg, 23-6, on the day. The Maroons hit two posts and missed a penalty kick with no time left in the first half.

The goaltending combination of Chris Ebeling (Ellicott City, MD/Oakland Mills) and Joe Ghobrial (Bedford, VA/Holy Cross) made three saves for the Maroons and recorded the shutout, the team’s eighth of the year.

Regardless of what happens in the draw on Sunday, the Maroons will host an ODAC quarterfinal contest on Tuesday afternoon at the school’s Elizabeth Campus. The game is slated to begin at 2:30 pm; the opponent has yet to be determinied.
