#10 Maroons Slip Past W&L, 2-1

Pflugrad and Francois Net RC Goals

SALEM, VA--Ryan Pflugrad’s (Columbia, MD/Hammond) tap in of a Regi Francois (Springfield, VA/Washington International) crossing pass with 5:26 left in the contest proved to be the game-winner as the Roanoke College men’s soccer team top Washington & Lee, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The matchup of Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams leaves Roanoke as the only squad with a perfect record against league opponents. The Maroons, who are the nation’s 10th ranked team, improve to 5-0 in conference play and 10-0 overall. Washington & Lee suffers its first defeat of the season, falling to 7-1, 4-1 in league action.

A Washington & Lee foul near the top of the box gave the Maroons a free kick. After Chas Torrence’s (Chattanooga, TN/Baylor School) shot rebounded back out, the Maroons got the ball to Francois on the side. Francois then carried the ball to the end line and sent a crossing pass. Pflugrad had an easy tap-in past the W&L keeper for his third game-winner of the season.

Just 1:31 later, the Generals cut the RC lead in half as Andrew Grimes (Lexington, KY/Henry Clay) stuck in a Philip Miller (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) crosser.

The Maroons took a 1-0 lead with just 17:29 left in the game on a Francois goal. The sophomore struck a ball that deflected off a W&L defender. Because the ball had top spin after the deflection, instead of sailing over the net, it ‘sunk’ over the Generals’ goaltender.

The game was even in most categories. Roanoke held a 9-8 shot advantage, while the Generals had five corners compared to three for the Maroons. Both keepers in the game made three saves.

The Maroons head to Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday for a 2:00 pm contest against the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins.
