Maroons Are Awarded Third in Indoor Championships
Mistaken Identity Causes Scoring Error
SALEM, Va.--A case of mistaken identity has been uncovered, and as a result, the Roanoke College men's track team has been awarded third place at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Indoor Championships. Originally in fourth, the men vaulted past Washington & Lee to claim the third position. The scoring error came in the men's 800-meter run. Roanoke runner Justin Wilkinson (Blue Ridge, VA/Lord Botetourt) was orignally thought to have crossed the line in the seventh position, with a time of 2:10.71. But after reviewing tapes of the race, meet officials determined that Wilkinson actually crossed the line in the number-four spot, running a time of 2:06.43. With the two added points, the Maroons broke out of a tie for the fourth spot, and grabbed the third position.
The team officially now has 21 points for the championship. The third place finish is the team's best since taking a runner-up in the 1987 meet.
