Olds and Smith Named ODAC Players of the Week

Olds Shines for Women's Soccer, Smith for Cross Country

SALEM, VA--Roanoke College student-athletes Shelley Olds (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) and Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) have been named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Players of the Week for their efforts for the Maroons last week. Olds gets her award for her play for RC’s women’s soccer team, while Smith’s honor comes after she won the Washington & Lee cross country invitational.

Olds, who garners Player of the Week honors for the first time in her RC tenure, scored seven goals and had three assists as the Maroons went 2-0 last week. She scored three goals and had one helper in RC’s 9-0 win over Emory & Henry College. In a 7-1 victory over Greensboro, Olds outdid herself, scoring four times and handing out two assists. Her 10 point day in the win set a new Roanoke College record for points in one contest. The old mark was seven. On the season, Olds leads all RC scorers with the seven goals and three assists for 17 points.

For the fourth time since the beginning of the 1999 season, Smith was named the ODAC’s Outstanding Athlete of the Week. Smith won this past weekend’s Washington & Lee Invitational by running a season-best 18:20 on the 5,000 meter course. She beat the second place finisher by 1:33. Smith has now led Roanoke across the line in 30 consecutive races, dating back to the 1997 season.

The RC women’s soccer team travels to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, while the cross country team takes this coming weekend off before hosting its own Maroon Invitational on the 30th.
